What happened to Korra?
Korra is the ghost over the whole series: the Avatar everyone blames for the end of the world. Here is what the show has said on screen, what Paramount+ has said officially, and the questions it has not answered yet. No fan theories dressed up as facts.
Why the world blames Korra
In episode 2, "Into the Storm", Karthik explains the hatred of the Avatar to Pavi and Nisha: history records that Korra caused the Cataclysm, the worldwide event that turned the planet into the Harshlands and left only the seven havens standing. That is the official story the havens teach, and it is why Ellora's citizens paint anti-Avatar slogans in episode 5 and why Molin claims to have seen the Avatar's eyes flash red in episode 4.
Note what the show has not said: it has not shown Korra doing anything. Everything so far is secondhand, told 225 years after the fact by people with a reason to want a villain. Avatar has used this structure before, with the Fire Nation's version of Sozin and the Air Nomads, so treat "history blames Korra" as a claim the series intends to test.
Is Korra dead?
Almost certainly, by simple arithmetic: the series is set 225 years after her era, and Pavi is the Avatar, which under the Avatar Cycle means Korra's life ended and the spirit moved on. Korra was a Water Tribe Avatar; the cycle runs water, earth, fire, air, so an earthbending Avatar after Korra is exactly what the cycle predicts.
What is not known is how she died, when relative to the Cataclysm, or whether there were Avatars between her and Pavi. The show's own line is "over 200 years", and the existence of twin sisters who can both bend four elements is already a break from the normal cycle, so do not assume the gap was filled in the usual way. Korra and the Avatar State
Paramount+'s official primer for the show says two things about the world's state: portals now connect the human and spirit worlds, and Korra no longer has her Avatar State. The first is a direct continuation of Korra, where she left the spirit portals open after Harmonic Convergence. The second is the most concrete hint the studio has dropped: something took the Avatar State from Korra, and the show is telling us that mattered.
How that connects to the Cataclysm has not been broadcast. The show's own hints so far are the mysterious entity that struck the twins in episode 2, the red crystals and the fear plague in episode 6, and DiMartino's comment that viewers will "learn about where the Korra era was heading", which points at the spirit-energy technology of Korra's final season. What we still don't know
- What the Cataclysm physically was, and whether Korra caused it, failed to stop it, or was framed.
- Whether Korra died in the Cataclysm or long after it.
- What happened to Asami, Republic City, the United Republic and the other nations. None has been named on screen in episodes 1–6.
- Whether any Avatar existed between Korra and the twins.
This page is updated after each batch of episodes. Last checked against episode 6, "Night of the Afflicted".
Questions people ask
Did Korra destroy the world in Seven Havens?
That is what the havens' history says, according to Karthik in episode 2. The show has not shown it, and it is written as the official story rather than as confirmed fact.
Does Korra appear in Avatar: Seven Havens?
Not in person through episode 6. She is discussed, not shown, and no flashback has aired yet.
Is Asami in Seven Havens?
No mention of Asami in the first six episodes. The series takes place 225 years after Korra, so any appearance would be in flashback or record.
Why is the Avatar hated in Seven Havens?
Because the Cataclysm is blamed on Korra, and the havens have taught for two centuries that the Avatar is an annihilator rather than a protector.
